Utah's mountain communities occupy some of the most ecologically sensitive land in the American West. The properties we work on in Alpine, Highland, and the foothills above Provo Canyon sit within watersheds, wildlife corridors, and fire-interface zones that require us to think carefully about every design decision. Sustainability isn't a marketing position for us — it's a professional obligation.
Water is the most important resource in an arid mountain climate, and it's also where thoughtful landscape design delivers its greatest return. Properly designed irrigation systems — sized correctly, equipped with smart controllers and rain sensors, and maintained regularly — can reduce outdoor water use by 30 to 50 percent compared to conventionally maintained landscapes without any visible change in appearance. We design every irrigation system to these standards as a baseline, not as an upgrade.
Plant selection is equally powerful. Our design team maintains an extensive knowledge of species that thrive in Wasatch Front conditions with minimal supplemental water once established. Ornamental grasses, native shrubs, and drought-adapted perennials have come a long way aesthetically — today's low-water plants are just as beautiful as their thirstier alternatives, often more so, because they're growing in conditions they're adapted to rather than fighting their environment.
Fire-wise design has become increasingly important across our service area. That means thinking carefully about spacing between shrub masses near the home, choosing low-resin plant species in high-risk zones, and creating defensible space that doesn't look like a cleared lot but instead like a thoughtfully designed landscape with open structure.
Finally, healthy soil is the foundation of sustainable landscape performance. We invest in soil preparation, organic amendments, and long-term fertility programs because landscapes built on good soil simply perform better — they use less water, support more vigorous plants, and require fewer inputs over time. Sustainability and luxury are not in tension; they reinforce each other.
